Alabama-based rock band HALO are attracting the attention of all lovers of quality AOR. But as Tony Cummings reports,A thoroughly engaging collection of AOR songs with a radio friendly, mid tempo hooky opener "Anytime", some more aggressive rockers full of scrunching guitars (producers John and Dino Elefante's speciality of course) and some sing along rock ballads like "Hello Forever" and "Behold The Lamb". Scott has a nice wheezing rock voice who can accommodate a Curtis Stigers' style easily. Does "Hello Forever" break any new musical ground? No. Does it re-arrange the formula of AOR with a degree of craft? Yep, their US success has hardly been overnight,The average British band looks with something perilously close to envy when they view the American rock gospel scene. In the US of A, groups like Petra and White Heart sell mega-units, play huge stadiums and seem to breathe different air from Britain's grassroots semi-pro rockers, slogging away in church hall obscurity. But America's glittering Christian Music prizes are largely illusionary. For every CCM celebrity there are a thousand bands toughing it out in the harsh reality of audience apathy, battered PA's and zilch finance. But hearteningly, years of dues paying can, by the grace of God, sometimes produce more than a scrapbook of memories. Take Halo for instance. Heralded by America's CCM industry as "one of the brightest new AOR bands to emerge on the scene" the band in fact spent nine years in grassroots obscurity in Alabama only giving up their day jobs little more than twenty months ago. Lead singer and lyricist Scott Springer is grateful that the band weren't catapulted to record contracts and subculture fame in the first bloom of youth. "Those years of playing parking lots and flat-back trucks were vital preparation for us" he drawled in his lugubrious Alabama accent. "We had an opportunity to mature as Christians so that we were ready when the recording contract and the touring began. I guess we still had a few stars in our eyes when we quit our day jobs. But we knew that nothing was going to come easy and knuckled down to working very hard." Halo, originally consisting of Scott Springer (vocals, bass), Keith Mimms (guitar) and Mike Graham (drums, keyboards) had formed in 1980. Springer had been converted while at high school and had a straight-ahead zeal to preach the gospel. "We used to play some rock and then I'd tell the kids about their need of a Saviour. Sharing the gospel was what kept us going. God had given us a vision and I knew it would bear fruit."The young band (Mike was only 14 when he joined Halo!) played weekends around the Alabama area until in 1986 a concert in Birmingham by Christendom's most popular rockers, Petra, proved to be a turning point for Halo. Remembers Scott: "It was after the show and we were at the side of the stage timidly waiting for our turn of a chance to speak to one of the band. Just as we got talking to Bob Hartman one of our friends shouted across to Bob "hey, these guys are a Christian rock band as well". It was pretty embarrassing; we weren't pushy sort of people and didn't send off demo tapes and stuff. But Bob seemed interested and asked if we had a tape. So one of us went out to the car and got one and gave it to Bob. We never expected to hear anything more, but about a month later Bob called me at home and said he liked the playing and the songs on our little tape." The Petra veteran took Halo under his wing. Hartman drove down to see the band, and on a subsequent visit gave the band a lot of Petra's old equipment to replace the decidedly clapped out gear that the Alabama rockers had previously been forced to use. In 1989 Bob took Halo into his home studio and recorded a 4-song Demo, subsequently playing it to Petra's producers John and Dino Elefante. The Elefantes were in the process of forming Pakaderm Records and Halo were one of the first acts signed to the fledgling company. The resulting 'Halo' album attracted immediate attention on US Christian rock radio, the press release description of "Pakaderm Power pop...in the style of Foreigner, Journey and Kansas" aptly summarising the classy AOR on offer. "We quit our own jobs when we began working on the first album," recalls Scott. "It really was an act of faith, a lot of bands would have kept their jobs until they saw some money coming in. But I really felt a call, a sense that God was saying 'now is the time!' I'd felt for a while that maybe the Lord was calling me to be a full-time youth pastor but when the Halo thing suddenly took off I knew that was it." For the band's second album 'Heaven Calling' Halo have moved a little way from the simple (some might say simplistic) calls to faith that featured heavily on 'Halo'. "The songs on 'Halo' were largely the numbers we'd included in our live set for years", explains lyricist Scott. "We saw ourselves very much as evangelists, so the first album was what you might call straight in your face Jesus. I make no apologies for that. But on the second album I made a conscious effort to write lyrics with a little more sensitivity and also address some of the issues which believers are having to grapple with. For instance I saw there were a lot of parents bringing their kids to our concerts so I wrote a song called 'My Buddy', about the responsibility parents have in representing Jesus to their children. Then there's 'Jacobs Dream', which came about after I'd been reading Genesis 28 and 'Heaven Calling' which really speaks to both Christians and the non-saved equally." The production of the Elefantes on 'Heaven Calling' is nothing short of masterly. The newest member of Halo , guitarist Barry Graul(who'd previously worked with Rich Cua) offers some blistering axe work, Scott's rich and bluesy voice rides effortlessly across the solid rhythms and the Elefantes tease the hooks to maximum catchiness. In Cross Rhythms 10 the reviewer enthused how the album establishes Halo as "one of the leading rock bands of the Christian counter-culture." In Barry Grawl, Halo have found a superlative replacement for Keith Mimms who had to leave the band ("for personal reasons") Barry is an up and coming composer with a song on the current White Cross LP and another on the recently released Mark Pogue album. Currently Halo are writing material for their third Pakaderm album which will be released in the Autumn. In the meantime there's still the slog of on-the-road work to keep paying the bills. "We've never gone out as an opening act", comments Scott Springer. "We want a chance to minister, to preach, so we do a whole show by ourselves. The reality of our lifestyle isn't particularly glamorous; we still haul our equipment into halls. But we're seeing young people coming to Christ and that's worth a whole heap of tough times.

Alabama power pop band featuring Scott Springer on vocals and produced by John and Dino Elefante, who also co-wrote many of the songs,If you like Petra, this radio-friendly album will surely delight you. My personal favorite: "Thy Will Be Done" and "Heaven Calling" and "Clim The Mountain" and "In The Eyes OF The Storm", I really liked this album, especially "Jacob's Dream", "Saved By Grace", and "It's Your Decision". Clean production ala Pakaderm. Reminded me of another band that I loved, Idle Cure (it's been as easy for me to find anything by Halo as trying to attend a Barnabas concert in 1985) not only a rocker, but the lyrical message is loud and clear and inspirational , would definitely recommend this album. Anything with the Elefante Brother's brand on it is a masterpiece as far as I'm concerned, more than Lite AOR. This is the kind of stuff a born-again doctor would play in his office--or in the elevators at Bob Jones University. Apparently, 4 minutes was all Halo could pack into a song: Anything longer would have strained them too much. A best forgotten band which should be avoided like the plague,This Band reminds me of the sound of the secular band "Yes". A very hard to find CDs But you can have it now here there's only one copy from all the cds I'm selling here so once it will be sold my bussine is Done." Halo - Same title" the AOR finery at hand. The keyboard work is truly first-rate and the vocals soar with all the polish and precision of Elefante production. "Skyrocket", "Lose to Live", "Good Feeling" and "Jesus Music" are four reasons to hunt down this Christian AOR gem ASAP!! If you know their music already, then this is no surprise to you then. For those who wish to experiment, then check this out immediately, as well as their follow up "Heavens Calling" from 1991. The mere fact that the Elefante's are involved should help you cement that decision. And what became of Keith Mims?? He Went For his solo Career on "Language Barrier" is one of the tastiest solos of all time, anyway "Halo" Halo released two albums in the early 90's on Pakaderm records and produced by John and Dino Elefante. Simple understandable lyrics and catchy hooks with a strong gospel message, 80's rock with the Pakaderm stamp of approval.

BIOGRAPHY/REVIEW:
When metal and hard rock swept the nation in the early 80s to the mid 90s, it even caused a stir in the contemporary Christian music scene. The old school bands like Petra and Whiteheart ratcheted things up a little heavier, but what was wonderful was seeing truly unique bands like Mastedon, Whitecross, Bloodgood, Barren Cross, and, of course, Stryper erupt out of nowhere onto the metal scene. That being said, "Lofcaudio" is Mastedon's second cd, originally released in 1990. This is more AOR than heavy metal, though every song is, from a songwriting standpoint, rock solid. The album opens with a fast rocker called "Holiest One;" what always amazes me about this song is how the keyboards don't weaken the song; it retains its rock edge. "Life on the Line" gives John Elefante a chance to shine on a melodic rock tune that highlights his range from Matthew Sweet-contending high notes to the grittier voice he shows on other songs. By far the best and harder tunes on here are "Run to the Water" and "Taken Down Below," two metal tunes that can hold up with any band, Christian or not. I was darn impressed with both these songs, so much so that I never forgot them and pined away for this cd for fifteen years later and mostly just for these two songs. I could talk about all the songs, but they're all good rocking songs - with one exception (in my opinion, for what's it's worth) - that show that the name "Christian" can also be synonymous with rock. I was so impressed with the instrumental tune "Stampede" which highlights mostly keyboards, but this was John and Dino Elefante's forte. (It's not lost on any one that puns on Elefante were the impetus behind choosing the name Mastedon as well as operating under the moniker of Pakaderm Records . . . hardy har har : Anyway, if you like 80s rock (think Asia blended with Triumph), you'll like this. Bear in mind that these guys are unapologetically but not beat-you-in-the-head-with-a-Bible Christian. You get thoughtful insights into the Christian life like the line from "Living For You" that's a believer's paradox: "I must be weak so I can be strong; I'm living for you." On a grading scale, Mastedon's "Lofcaudio" rates an "A" in my gradebook. With, than God for Mastedon.

Former Kansas Vocalist and his producer brother put out some great fairly hard guitar rock, John and Dino Elefante were putting their Christian Music company together and part of that effort was this studio album. Mastedon didn't tour, although they had a memorable performance at Cornerstone. This album and Lofcaudio were the only albums the guys produced as Mastedon. It's A Jungle is a collection of simple, catchy songs but when you have heard them played a couple of times they become worship music at the top of John Elefante's lungs. The first five songs are good radio-friendly efforts with underlying Christian themes, then "Get Up" begins to ramp up the emotion and presents a call to action. The last four songs go for the heart, with "Love That Will Survive" as an anthem to Christian faith, "Innocent Girl" as a heartfelt lament for the lost and then "Shine On"s strong call to faith and redemption is followed up by "Right Hand"s awesome worshipful Cry to God/celebration of being in His presence, This album is getting harder and harder to find, but if you are a John Elefante fan, this is a must have. It's a real mix of style, but contains some excellent songs overall. This is one I have to pull out every so often and rock out. Good stuff,This CD, along with Lofcaudio, are the only two discs that John and Dino Elefante's group called Mastedon ever made, at least to date. That's too bad, because both albums define quality and great music. If you can get your hands on a copy of either album,Cuz even me I am so sad to sell my stuffs, once it will be sold bussiness will done.

Rare and hard to find. This early christian group (1989 WORD Inc.) ALLIES are produced and arranged by randy thomas and bob carlisle."Long Way To Paradise",Most folks only know Bob Carlisle from the song Butterfly Kisses, but there was a Bob before... that absolutely could shake the rafters and deserves a listen. This project has a rock and blues feel from the moment it starts. From the soul reaching expressions of In My Life, to my personal favorite that delivers the rock I long for, Another Feather In Your Cap, which has a driving beat and instrumentation that needs to be turned up loud. The title cut Man With A Mission opens with some awesome guitar playing by Randy Thomas. Heaven has got to be my second favorite, the background choir helps set the stage for this song, it has all the flavor and is still very relevant today..."As I read the morning paper it hits me once again...were surrounded by the evil of a world that's dead in sin." From the fast songs to the slow songs, it has great variety. When this copy wears out I will buy another. Allies was a tight band it shows musically and throughout their vocals as well. Each musican and singer brings great talent that helps it all come together. All songs were written by Bob Carlisle and Randy Thomas, I wish they were still together as a band,If you know Bob Carlisle only for his daddy Ballad "Butterfly Kisses", you may not realize he made his mark first as a pop/rocker rather than an adult contemporary crooner. Allies paired Carlisle with Randy Thomas, Jim Erickson, Sam Scott and Matthew Chapman in a band that sold respectably in Christian circles through the 80s and early 90s. This album placed 2 hits (#3 "Surrender" and #9 "Don't Run Away") on the Christian radio charts. Allies' popularity probably came in large part due to the soulful grit in Carlisle's vocals on the rockier cuts and clear-cut lyrics. Carlisle's voice is usually an advantage, making cuts like "Second Chance" better than they might otherwise be, although he overdoes it at times ("Pardon Me" veers into Michael Bolton territory). On other songs, even his pipes can't save the song from the trash heap. "Morningstar" features this couplet: "Wish I may Wish I might, open up my eyes tonight and see you face to face my Morningstar".. High points on the CD are "Send Me", "Don't You Worry" and "Don't Keep Him Waiting", which at times sounds like the Police's "white reggae". Low points are the aforementioned "Morningstar" and "Pardon Me" , Allies leaped out of the middling pack and became one of the better Christian pop bands of their time. Again produced by Dino Elefante and Randy Thomas, this time they brought a stronger pack of tunes and it makes for a better 40 minutes. It also placed one track on Christian radio. (#6 hit "If You Believe") There are no outright cringers on this one, although opener "Hardened Hearts" and "Harmony" are less compelling than much of the other material. Those who despise Digital Drums will dock this album points for that, but c'mon, this was recorded in 1986 and it was the "hip" thing then. Vocalist Bob Carlisle seems in better command of his voice here and spends less time "showing off" his range and more just trying to communicate the lyric. Standouts here are the hunger relief ballad "Prayer for the Children", apocalyptic pop/rocker "Runnin' Out of Time", a song from Jesus' point of view to his disciples ("Somebody Told Me You Were Crying") written as though between His Crucifixion and His resurrection 3 days later, "Jacque Remembers" (a new Christian looking back at where she's been...it includes a neat reference to the Beatles 'Getting Better') and a song (autobiographical?) about a musician with a struggling marriage asking for another chance ("Let's Fall in Love") ("All Over Again") If you're not someone who gets too hungup on whether a certain Keyboard Sound, Guitar tone, or production setup is "dated", then this should prove a welcome purchase for you.

formed the CCM hard rock trio Altar Boys in the early '80s; the band released five albums before splitting up by the turn of the decade. Altar Boys' self-titled debut was released in 1984 by the Ministry Resource Center. "When You're a Rebel" appeared the next year on the Broken label, While "Gut Level Music" (1986) and :"Against the Grain" (1987) followed. The Altar Boys' final studio album (four compilations have also appeared) was Forever Music (1989). The band also released a video package, Called Mercy Is What We Cry For. Stand later formed the Clash of Symbols, while Crandall became a worship pastor in Victorville, California,I was skating when I was younger, and the Altar Boys were the christian alternative for bands like Nine Inch Nails and Suicidal Tendancies. And "Billy Idol" Their chord structure and beat truely represent the "grunge - punk" of the eighties (when you could actually tell what the singer was saying) All in all, if you like punk - this is an Excellent example of the sound punk should have stayed with. I've heard and played many different styles, but I have never heard the clean sound of the Altar Boys' (for lack of a better phrase) 'Gut Level Music' and message replicated anywhere since thenThe Altar Boys are a truly original and talented Christian band. Classifying themselves as punk, they are far from the simple 3 chord, music school dropouts of regular world punk. The message on these albums is uplifting plain and simple. The Altar Boys are not afraid to proclaim the name of Jesus Christ. Of all the albums the Altar Boys released I like these 2 the best. The music is hard and driving and the messages are plain, simple, and truthful. Lyrically this is some of my favorite rock music.Mike Stand (Lead Singer) does have a more poetic and artistically smoother side on his 2 solo albums.

BIOGRAPHY/ REIVEW:
Is this "gospel"? Maybe it's just great music. The name "Adam Again" refers to Christ, the "2nd Adam" of history (it was also a cool Michael O"Martian album from the 70s). That's appropriate, because this band makes music for Christians who aren't afraid to confront their "old self" in relation to the good life that Christ offers. These two albums are arguably the best of the five original studio albums Adam Again made. "Homeboys" (1990) lays down a generous amount of funk a la the mid-80s Talking Heads (check out the cover of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues"). Despite the sense of loss heard in some of the tracks, the band chugs along and does its thing with a lot of energy. I'd heard that somewhere along the way leader Gene Eugene and Riki Mchele got divorced from one another... was it after this album? You can hear tension in the music, but the themes of morality and redemption are still there. "Occam's Razor" (the philosophic idea that the simplest theory with the fewest assumptions is the most likely to be found correct) is THE song for a gospel apologist in the modern area. "Dig" (1992) is very complex and rewarding. It's darker, more brooding and melancholy, but again, if you listen carefully, the singer does not deny the greatness of God -- he merely admits that he often does not live up to the promises God has given. The grungy, Electric-Guitar-Heavy Music seems to push the listener further, until all the failures of self are crushed underfoot and only the love of God is left. It's powerful stuff. And great music. Gene Eugene often sounds like a poor man's Michael Stipe (if you really like REM's sound, check out also their last studio album, "Perfecta"). Unlike REM, who seems at time to simply make art for art's sake, Adam Again thrashes out with purpose and, ultimately, a destination. If you're a modern day Christian who appreciates honest music with its rough edges intact, this is defintiely the place for you. Honesty like this calls to mind the passage in Hebrews in which the writer describes the heroes of faith throughout history who, though forced to hide from persecution in caves, were those "of whom the world was not worthy." Five stars are not enough.

The sonic stew of Adam Again is Singer/Vocalist/Fender Rhodes/B3 player Gene Eugene, lead Guitarist Greg Lawless, Singer Riki Michelle, Jon Knox handling the backbeat, and Rocksolid Bass Guitarist Paul Valadex combining intelligent lyrics to a funk basted rock sound. But the essential genius of Adam Again is that they were able to capture genuine, honest gutlevel pain and show that faith and hope are still able to scratch through, allowing streams of light into dark places. On HOMEBOYS.

lyricist:
Gene Eugene examines a number of hopeless characters in the inner city: the numb crack addict ("The Fine Line"), the fugitive from justice ("Bad News on the Radio") and a man struggling with an estranged father ("No Regrets"). By not painting any immediate judgements on his characters, Eugene gets you to feel their humanity and see life through their eyes, and just perhaps, the way Jesus feels about a suffering world struggling along without Him. While there are no valleys, some gems sparkle more than others. The pained estrangment of a man from his father in "No Regrets", tender love song "Hideaway" and the stubborn optimism of "This Band is Our House" shine brightest. Part 2 of the CD is followup release DIG where Eugene's focus is more often turned inward and the guitars are darker and more distorted, reflecting the tangled weeds of the inner man we hide from the world at large.("Deep") is one of the exceptions, where Eugene aims his pen at the Church at large, blaming them for failing to care for those Jesus calls them to:"forgotten are the cross, and the naked and the lost, and the lover of the tired and cold") The highest points on this CD for me are "Worldwide" (which points the finger at American apathy to the rest of the world), "Walk Between the Raindrops" struggle for understanding, ("Walk between the raindrops if you can, Lord, tell me what kind of man makes this plan? It's a grand scam.."), a disintegrating love affair in "Hidden,Hidden" ("I fear that it could destroy me, if you reveal what's hidden...hidden") and the best song here, moving ballad "Dig" (which probably should have been the LAST track) which balances Eugene's tremulous vocal and a heavily vibratoed keyboard for a tale of the slow grind to spiritual maturity. I doubt your humanity if you can listen to this song and not be moved. These CDs are long out of print so finding them will be hit and miss...but it's well worth the search. Rest in peace, Gene...and thanks for the songs you left behind..
