BIOGRAPHY/ REIVEW:
Is this "gospel"? Maybe it's just great music. The name "Adam Again" refers to Christ, the "2nd Adam" of history (it was also a cool Michael O"Martian album from the 70s). That's appropriate, because this band makes music for Christians who aren't afraid to confront their "old self" in relation to the good life that Christ offers. These two albums are arguably the best of the five original studio albums Adam Again made. "Homeboys" (1990) lays down a generous amount of funk a la the mid-80s Talking Heads (check out the cover of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues"). Despite the sense of loss heard in some of the tracks, the band chugs along and does its thing with a lot of energy. I'd heard that somewhere along the way leader Gene Eugene and Riki Mchele got divorced from one another... was it after this album? You can hear tension in the music, but the themes of morality and redemption are still there. "Occam's Razor" (the philosophic idea that the simplest theory with the fewest assumptions is the most likely to be found correct) is THE song for a gospel apologist in the modern area. "Dig" (1992) is very complex and rewarding. It's darker, more brooding and melancholy, but again, if you listen carefully, the singer does not deny the greatness of God -- he merely admits that he often does not live up to the promises God has given. The grungy, Electric-Guitar-Heavy Music seems to push the listener further, until all the failures of self are crushed underfoot and only the love of God is left. It's powerful stuff. And great music. Gene Eugene often sounds like a poor man's Michael Stipe (if you really like REM's sound, check out also their last studio album, "Perfecta"). Unlike REM, who seems at time to simply make art for art's sake, Adam Again thrashes out with purpose and, ultimately, a destination. If you're a modern day Christian who appreciates honest music with its rough edges intact, this is defintiely the place for you. Honesty like this calls to mind the passage in Hebrews in which the writer describes the heroes of faith throughout history who, though forced to hide from persecution in caves, were those "of whom the world was not worthy." Five stars are not enough.
The sonic stew of Adam Again is Singer/Vocalist/Fender Rhodes/B3 player Gene Eugene, lead Guitarist Greg Lawless, Singer Riki Michelle, Jon Knox handling the backbeat, and Rocksolid Bass Guitarist Paul Valadex combining intelligent lyrics to a funk basted rock sound. But the essential genius of Adam Again is that they were able to capture genuine, honest gutlevel pain and show that faith and hope are still able to scratch through, allowing streams of light into dark places. On HOMEBOYS.
lyricist:
Gene Eugene examines a number of hopeless characters in the inner city: the numb crack addict ("The Fine Line"), the fugitive from justice ("Bad News on the Radio") and a man struggling with an estranged father ("No Regrets"). By not painting any immediate judgements on his characters, Eugene gets you to feel their humanity and see life through their eyes, and just perhaps, the way Jesus feels about a suffering world struggling along without Him. While there are no valleys, some gems sparkle more than others. The pained estrangment of a man from his father in "No Regrets", tender love song "Hideaway" and the stubborn optimism of "This Band is Our House" shine brightest. Part 2 of the CD is followup release DIG where Eugene's focus is more often turned inward and the guitars are darker and more distorted, reflecting the tangled weeds of the inner man we hide from the world at large.("Deep") is one of the exceptions, where Eugene aims his pen at the Church at large, blaming them for failing to care for those Jesus calls them to:"forgotten are the cross, and the naked and the lost, and the lover of the tired and cold") The highest points on this CD for me are "Worldwide" (which points the finger at American apathy to the rest of the world), "Walk Between the Raindrops" struggle for understanding, ("Walk between the raindrops if you can, Lord, tell me what kind of man makes this plan? It's a grand scam.."), a disintegrating love affair in "Hidden,Hidden" ("I fear that it could destroy me, if you reveal what's hidden...hidden") and the best song here, moving ballad "Dig" (which probably should have been the LAST track) which balances Eugene's tremulous vocal and a heavily vibratoed keyboard for a tale of the slow grind to spiritual maturity. I doubt your humanity if you can listen to this song and not be moved. These CDs are long out of print so finding them will be hit and miss...but it's well worth the search. Rest in peace, Gene...and thanks for the songs you left behind..
